Every day too many men and women across the globe struggle to feed their children a nutritious meal. In a world where we produce enough food to feed everyone, 815 million people – one in nine – still go to bed on an empty stomach each night. Even more – one in three – suffer from some form of malnutrition.
Eradicating hunger and malnutrition is one of the great challenges of our time. Not only do the consequences of not enough – or the wrong – food cause suffering and poor health, they also slow progress in many other areas of development like education and employment.
In 2015 the global community adopted the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development to improve people’s lives by 2030. Goal 2 – Zero Hunger – pledges to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, and is the priority of the World Food Programme.
Here at the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank, we embrace this global initiative in our local vision of ‘Creating a healthy, hunger-free community with adequate, nutritious food that is accessible to all.’ Our Food Bank was founded on October 23, 1984 as a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing a collection and redistribution system for surplus and donated food in the region. Today we serve 950 plus people each month, with 1 in 12 households in our community accessing our services during the year. Nearly half of the people we help feed are children.
The generosity of our donors and our volunteers plays a very important part in helping us to serve the number of families that we do. Together, with our community partners, volunteers and you. we support local initiatives that seek to end hunger and the root causes of food insecurity in our community. Our Food Bank endeavors to:
"I found myself unemployed due to CO-VID. As a father, unable to provide for my large family and the bills pilling up, I catch myself wondering how we were going to make it through this pandemic. Would my kids go hungry because the bills needed to be paid? Where could I turn to for help? Then someone suggested the Food Bank. Feeling ashamed but with no were to turn I reached out. After a brief conversation with one of their kind staff, my worry turned to relief. They provided me with a Hamper of food to sustain my large family. Today things are better for my family, but I will never forget the generosity of the Moose Jaw Food Bank. "
